James Pilkerton, III

Obituary of James Frederick Pilkerton, III

June 18, 2016 at Alive Hospice. Jimmy Pilkerton was born on March 21, 1959 in Bowling Green, Kentucky, the oldest son of James F. Pilkerton Jr. and Mary Knox Berger Pilkerton. Jimmy was raised and spent his adult life in Nashville. He was educated at Ensworth, Battle Ground Academy, University of Tennessee and Belmont University. Jimmy was a lifelong learner, devouring literature on various subjects, his favorites being spirituality and philosophy. A natural entrepreneur, Jimmy founded Summa Supply, a construction and building products company, in his early 20s. After selling Summa Supply in 1985, Jimmy returned to his family roots and joined Pilkerton Realtors, a residential real estate brokerage firm, in 1986 and served as the Managing Broker from 2000 until his death. With a compassionate heart, relentless work ethic and meticulous mind for detail, Jimmy along with his dear friend and business partner, Jim Terrell, built an esteemed real estate franchise with a visible culture of integrity, loyalty and most importantly, kindness. He will be forever grateful for the relationships he formed during his tenure. Jimmy was a renaissance man. His interests ranged from jazz music and interior design to eastern philosophy and southern cuisine. While he worked indoors at the same office on Richard Jones Road in Green Hills for nearly 30 years, it was the countryside that captured Jimmy’s heart. He spent weekends with his family at a beautiful, rustic cabin in Fernvale, Tennessee, where he devoted his time to cultivating the land and improving the grounds. Jimmy felt a deep connection with his cabin and with nature. Jimmy learned to view life from many different angles, which contributed to his most singular character trait: his profound empathy and compassion for all. Jimmy cared deeply for everyone, and he always made time for those who needed his attention. His natural warmth and kind attentiveness naturally drew people to Jimmy. Jimmy is survived by his wife, Karen Rowan Pilkerton; his children, Ali Pilkerton, Tish Picklesimer (Bryan) and Jay Pilkerton (Katheryn); his grandchildren, Jackson and Jimmy Picklesimer; his parents, J. Fred and Mary Knox Pilkerton; his siblings, Lynne Pilkerton (Mark Mason), Leif Pilkerton Gossett (Gavin) and Knox Pilkerton. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 25th, 11am at Benton Chapel on Vanderbilt’s campus (411 21st Ave South) with a visitation preceding the service beginning at 9am. There will be a private family burial. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Stewart Home School (4200 Lawrenceburg Road, Frankfort, Kentucky 40601).
