Obituary of Kathleen Waller Little Fell
Kathleen Little Fell
(May 18, 1925 – August 12, 2019)
Kathleen Little Fell, was born in 1925 in Alabama to parents, Kathleen Waller Little and Joseph Alexander Little, and an adoring older brother, Joseph II. The family was a part of the close knit Southern community of Bessemer and was especially connected with the Episcopal Church there. Kathleen was known to everyone in town as ‘Sister’. Her father died in 1928. In 1934 her mother married Felix Young Vann, who became a devoted stepfather. ‘Sister’ graduated from Bessemer High School and then from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in Lynchburg, VA in 1947. After living and working in both New York City and Cincinnati, OH, she returned to Alabama to work for the Episcopal Diocese of Alabama.
She met and married the love of her life, The Rev. Richard Cobb Fell, a priest in that diocese, who was serving three small churches in northern Alabama. Kathleen was the quintessential minister’s wife. She was well suited for the job, and she enjoyed it tremendously. Together Kathleen and Richard served St. Andrew’s Church in Arlington, VA; St. Thomas Church in Richmond, Va; St. Michael’s Church in Charleston, SC; and All Saints’ Church in Richmond, VA. Kathleen also taught school at St. Catherine’s School in Richmond, VA; Ashley Hall School in Charleston, SC; and Collegiate School in Richmond. Kathleen and Richard had two daughters, Kacky (Kathleen Waller Fell) and Gretta (Margaretta Fell Cape).
After her husband’s death in 1977, Kathleen maintained her close association with the Episcopal church. She was the Lay Assistant to the Rector of Holy Communion Church in Charleston, SC and, after moving to Nashville, TN in 1985, the Assistant to the Chaplain at St. Augustine’s Chapel at Vanderbilt in Nashville, TN. She was an Education For Ministry Mentor and served tirelessly in countless volunteer jobs at the church throughout her life. During her last ten years, she was an active resident of Richland Place where she continued to make friends like she had all her life. Kathleen was always a gracious hostess, a lively storyteller, a loyal friend, a voracious reader and learner, and a fierce advocate for the causes and people she loved.
Kathleen is survived by her two daughters, Kacky Fell of Nashville, TN and Gretta Cape of Charleston, SC; son-in-law Bob Cape; sister-in-law Sarah Goodpasture Little; niece Sarah Little Glover; niece Susan Little Berry and her wife Debbie Flagg; nephew Joe Little III and his wife Billie; nephew Bill Hamilton and his wife Linda; many well-loved grandnieces and grandnephews and cousins; beloved caretakers at Richland Place; the staff and volunteers from St. Augustine’s Chapel who brought church to her for years; and devoted friends, especially Susan Cone, Karen Dahlinger, and Phil Hatcher.
